After several weeks of non-stop rain, May 1st was actually the first day of amazing “spring-like” weather in 2010, so it couldn’t have been a more perfect day for an outdoor wedding. The Hans Fahden Vineyards is a beautiful setting… the venue is surrounded by a lush garden with a duck pond, a really cool covered bridge, and the famous rolling hills of Napa Valley visible from all vantage points.

Trinh & John were married on April 17, 2010 and had a traditional Vietnamese wedding in Sacramento, CA. I knew it was going to be a treat to work with them because they’re really upbeat and have a great sense of humor. On the wedding day they truly cared about their vendors and made sure that we (and the photographers) were taken care of all throughout the day. They even told the catering staff to make sure we got our dinner first at the reception, which is unheard of!

I usually don’t do weddings outside the Bay Area, but they were gracious enough to put me up in the hotel where they stayed — The Citizen in downtown Sacramento, so of course I couldn’t decline I was hoping to do a time lapse of the city skyline from my hotel room window but unfortunately I was on the 3rd floor and didn’t have much of view. It’s a really nice boutique hotel though and a nice place to stay if you’re in the downtown area.

Another cool thing about this wedding was that I shot it with Jason Da Cunha who was my 2nd shooter during the ‘02 – ‘04 season. He now lives in Sacramento so it worked out perfectly that he was available for this gig. It was great to re-connect and work with him again and made me realize that I’m now officially open for business in Sacramento as well as the Bay Area!

Here’s a “sneak peak” movie trailer I put together for the wedding.

I recently received a call from a bride who had debated hiring me in ’09 but decided to hire another videographer who was a lot cheaper. She told me she had finally received the video and it was, in her own words…” a complete mess.” She said the camera work was shaky and the sound at the reception was so bad that the speeches were practically inaudible. So she was calling me to see if somehow I could “fix” the video.

(Sigh). This is definitely not the first time I’ve received a call like this. It really saddens me when I hear about these situations… clients who went cheap on video and received something that’s almost unwatchable.

A big part of my job is to educate clients and potential clients about the importance of hiring the right video professional because in this business you usually get what you pay for. Often, however, (like in this case) it seems to fall on deaf ears because many people can only see a “price at the end of the tunnel” so to speak. This is understandable. I mean, we all have our budgets to maintain. However I think many people are finally waking up to the idea that video should be put at the top of the list.

I’d like to share a few blurbs from other clients and a wedding coordinator who would also have done things differently if they had known better!

This is from a bride’s post on Wedding Wire who opted to save money by having a friend do the video for her wedding, rather than hire a professional:

It’s been a year since my wedding, and after not having a videographer, I’m finding it’s the ONLY big, giant, horrible wedding regret and mistake I have made. We bought an expensive HD video camera before the wedding, gave it to a friend to record the ceremony, and they set it to camera instead of video, and we didn’t get anything but a single crappy snapshot. I get SO sad when I think about it, to the point of tears. The ceremony had such amazing moments for both of us, and I’m sick over it that the memories are going to fade over time. SO GET A VIDEOGRAPHER!!! PLEASE!

This next post is from a wedding coordinator who suddenly discovered the importance of wedding video. (interesting to note that a lot of wedding planners are trained to tell people to “skip video” if their budget is tight, but many of them are now singing a different tune, which is good!):

As a planner, I used to say skip the video if your budget cannot afford it since there are alternatives. But, four years ago my father passed away suddenly. While going through the attic, my mom found some old VHS tapes she figured were vacations, graduations, etc. To her surprise, one was their wedding video. She converted them to CD and played it for us (I have three siblings) and we all just sat quietly, staring at the screen, watching my dad come back to life. It was priceless to see our father the way he was, they way he held my mothers hand and laughing on their wedding day. A picture is worth a thousand words, but hearing your husband’s voice who has since passed is like music to your ears. So now, I tell all of my clients they should put video at the top of their list!

Shervin & Sadaf were married on 9.6.09 in SF’s financial district at the Juliana Morgan Ballroom in the Merchant’s Exchange Building. They had a beautiful Persian wedding and a great reception with outstanding food and lots of dancing! They were such a wonderful couple to work with – truly nice people surrounded by the love of their families.

Before the wedding, they got ready at the Omni Hotel right across from Merchants Exchange. They picked a perfect day for their wedding… this was Labor Day Weekend and the Bay Bridge was closed, so downtown SF was like a ghost town! I couldn’t believe it when I pulled up at the venue Sunday morning and found a parking spot right in front! That’s unheard of in San Francisco.

Anyhow, here is a highlight segment I put together of the bride and groom prep and part of their photo session before the ceremony. Enjoy.

So I’m pretty excited to have just purchased a brand spanking new Canon EOS 7D. But wait (you might be saying), this looks like a still camera and I thought you are a videographer?? Yes this is true… it is a still camera, but it’s a video camera too. An AMAZING video camera. The images this thing can produce just blows me away. It shoots full HD 1920 x 1280 resolution at 60p, 30p and best of all… 24p which yields a really nice film-look. With a virtually infinite choice of lenses, it’s possible to get amazing high-end Hollywood film looks with this camera which usually isn’t possible with most fixed-lens video cameras costing under $25,000.

It’s only drawback is that is has limited record times… 12 minutes at time. So while it’s not a practical camera to shoot an entire wedding, it will definitely be great for getting specialty shots throughout the day. It will be perfect for shooting things like engagement shoots, bride/groom preps, pre and post ceremony photo sessions, cocktail hours, and dancing at the reception, etc.

I will post some sample footage on here as soon as it becomes available.

That’s a lot of newness! I’m excited to finally launch this long overdue blog. 2009 has been a pivotal year in a lot of very different ways — I fully adopted shooting and editing in high definition, I changed the name of the company, redesigned the web site, and started blogging. And if that wasn’t enough, I’m also getting married in October. Yes that’s right, now I get to experience what it’s like on the ‘other’ side of the camera! I’ll be blogging more about that later.

When I’m back from my honeymoon and able to resume a ‘normal’ life again then hopefully this blog will take wings and I can start posting regularly. And believe me folks, living a life consumed by wedding planning is far from normal. If you’re reading this then I assume you know what I’m talking about I will most likely be posting about recent weddings I’ve produced, spreading some vendor love, and even bore you with the latest and greatest cameras or software plug-ins I’m purchasing.

Stay tuned for more…
